I’m not a sweet tooth – however, I have always loved jelly lollies (and Haigh’s chocolate).
Usually, the harder the jelly lolly, the better – but not too hard, as they get into another genre of lolly and become too sickly sweet for me.
I’m talking about jelly snakes – particularly the Allens kind.
The Natural Confectionery Group has great options too, but there’s something about the products you interacted with in your childhood, even if their ingredients have changed a little – the familiarity is super comforting.
(Insert happy vibes.)
I remember going to the glorious Queen Victoria Market as a child, and the lolly stall there was oh my God!
Jars and containers of heavenly sweets (some with terribly inappropriate names) like: Musk Sticks, Fags (lolly cigarettes), Fruit Tingles, Red Skins, Violet Crumbles, Choo Choo Bars, Licorice straps, etc but my faves, oh my faves, were the hard jelly boats and hats and the Mates – the hardest caramel chocolates.
Where have they all gone?
I’m ok, really
No, I’m not drowning my pelvic sorrows in sugar, but I have discovered a new way to encourage my brain to look forward to getting in the car.
I dread the car because it causes pain and discomfort and affects my days after I’ve been in it, as a passenger.
I still don’t drive – have tried but it impacts enormously, and I’m just not prepared to push through, have to sacrifice a bundle of other things to get 10 minutes down the road.
If I knew I could build the driving up to an hour without any effect, then, of course, I’d do it. It’s hard being grounded in a regional town, and, well, it’s too depressing to list all the reasons, so I’ll stick to my positive realisation that may help you, too.
Instead of dreading the car, firing up my body and feeling all that tension, I now think of the lolly stash in constant supply in our glove compartment.
I have a (foody) light start to the day because without a doubt, I’ll be having at least two snakes – perhaps 2 more on the return trip as well.
I could seriously eat a whole bag in one go. My fave flavours are yellow and green.
This might not cure my coccyx’s relationship with a vibrating car seat, but I do believe it’s chipping away at a negative relationship with the car and with travelling longer than 10 minutes.
So have a think about what you might put within your reach of a difficult task.
Please do remember that I’m not a scientist or medical specialist, but I do have some lived experience on the topic – in fact, I have now clocked up 19 years of it.
Snaaaaaaaake!!
